Project Judging Criteria


The criteria used by our judges are established by the Simcoe County Region Science and Technology Fair Committee, and are based in principle, on those used in the Canada-Wide Science Fairs.

Scientific Thought (45 points)

Projects are classified by:

Division (Computer Science, Physical & Mathematical Science, Engineering, Earth & Environmental Science, Biotechnology, Life Science)

Type (Experiment, Study, Innovation)

Level (1, 2, 3, 4)

An Experiment is an investigation undertaken to test a specific hypothesis.
A Study is a collection and analysis of data to reveal evidence of a fact or a situation of scientific interest.
An Innovation is a type of project involving the development and evaluation of innovative devices, models, or techniques and/or approaches.

Each of these three types of exhibits is grouped into levels one through level four. To ensure consistency in evaluating projects while still showing the relative difficulty between them, a point system has been arranged as follows:

Level one    - will be marked out of a maximum of 15 marks
Level two    - will be marked out of a maximum of 25 marks
Level three - will be marked out of a maximum of 35 marks
Level four   - will be marked out of a maximum of 45 marks





An investigation undertaken to test a scientific hypothesis using experiments. Experimental variables, if identified, are controlled to some extent.


The development and evaluation of innovative devices, models, or techniques or approaches in fields such as technology, engineering, or computers (both hardware and software).


A collection and analysis of data to reveal evidence of a fact or a situation of scientific interest. It could include a study of cause and effect relationship or theoretical investigations of scientific data.

Variables, if identified, are by their nature not feasible to control, but an effort to make meaningful correlation is encouraged.

Experiment Level 1

(5-15 points)

Duplicating of a known experiment to confirm the hypothesis. Hypothesis is totally predictable

Innovation Level 1

(5-15 points)

Building models (devices) to
duplicate existing technology.

Study Level 1

(5-15 points)

Study of existing printed material
related to the basic issue.

Experiment Level 2

(15- 25 points)

Extend a known experiment through modification of procedures, data gathering and application.

Innovation Level 2

(15- 25 points)

Make improvements to, or
demonstrate new applications for
existing technological systems or
equipment and be able to justify

Study Level 2

(15- 25 points)

Study of material collected through compilation of existing data and through personal observations.
Display attempts to address a
specific issue.

Experiment Level 3

(25-35 points)

Devise and carry out an original
experiment with controls. Variables are identified. Some significant variables are controlled. Data analysis includes a graphic presentation with simple statistics.

Innovation Level 3

(25-35 points)

Design and build innovative
technology or provide adaptations to existing technology that will have
economic applications and/or human benefit.

Study Level 3

(25-35 points)

Study based on observations and
literacy research illustrating various options for dealing with a relevant issue. Appropriate arithmetic, graphical or statistical analysis in relation to some significant variable(s).

Experiment Level 4

(35-45 points)

Devise and carry out original
experimental research that attempts to control or investigate most significant variables. Data analysis includes statistical analysis.

Innovation Level 4

(35-45 points)

Integrate several technologies,
inventions or designs and construct an innovative technological system that will have commercial and/or human benefit.

Study Level 4

(35-45 points)

Study correlating information from a variety of significant sources that may illustrate cause and effect through synthesis. Significant variable(s) identified with in-depth statistical analysis of data.

Creative Ability (25 points)

1. To what degree is the problem original?
2. Does the approach to solving the problem show ingenuity?
3. Does the interpretation of the data show creativity?
4. Has equipment been used in an ingenious way?
5. Does the construction or design of equipment show creativity?

Note: Judges must consider whether something is original for the student. It is very important to ascertain the nature of assistance that the student has received.
Collections cannot be considered to be original unless they are used to support an investigation and help to answer a question in some creative way.

(5-10 points)

Little imagination shown.
Project design is simple
with minimal student input. A textbook or magazine type project.

(10-15 points)

Some creativity shown in project of fair to good design. Standard approach using common resources/
equipment. Topic is a
current or common one.

(15-20 points)

Imaginative project. Good use of available resources.
Well thought out above the ordinary approach. Creativity in design and/or use of materials.

(20-25 points)

A highly original project
or novel approach. Shows resourcefulness, creativity in design, use of equipment and/or construction of project.
